Osmosis machine or filter bottle: what difference and which one to choose?
Improve the taste of tap water, reduce chlorine, protect yourself from PFAS or pesticides… Depending on your goal, a simple filter bottle may be enough, or you’ll need to switch to reverse osmosis. Here’s how to make the right choice.
The filtering carafe: simple, but limited
The bottle contains a small cartridge, most often made of activated charcoal and resin. It significantly improves the taste (less chlorine) and slightly reduces the limestone.
- Strengths : low purchase price, no installation required.
- Limits Small volume, cartridge to be changed approximately every month; reduced effectiveness against dissolved pollutants (nitrates, PFAS, pesticides). A poorly maintained cartridge can also favor the development of bacteria.
The osmoseur: the most complete filtration
Installed under the sink, the osmoseur passes the water through several filters and then through a reverse osmosis membrane ultra-fine. Only water molecules pass through it: the vast majority of dissolved contaminants are retained.
- What he reduces : PFAS, pesticides, nitrates, heavy metals, drug residues, bacteria and viruses, chlorine and limestone.
- Strengths : Pure water at your fingertips directly from the tap, with regular maintenance (filters every year or so depending on the model).
- To know Part of the water is used to rinse the membrane; our recent models limit this waste. Some models remineralize the water for a more rounded taste.
Comparative table
| Filtering carafe | Under-sink osmosis unit | |
|---|---|---|
| Taste and chlorine | ✔ Improved | ✔ Significantly improved |
| Limestone | Reduced in part | ✔ Eliminated in large part |
| PFAS, pesticides, nitrates | Limited effect | ✔ Significantly reduced |
| Bacteria and viruses | ✘ | ✔ Retained by the membrane |
| Available volume | 1 to 2 liters at a time | At will, at the tap |
| Interview | Cartridge approximately every month | Filters about once a year |
| Installation | None | Under the sink, simple |
Which one to choose?
- You only want water without chlorine taste A bottle may be enough, if you change the cartridge regularly.
- You want to eliminate pollutants (PFAS, pesticides, nitrates) and stop buying bottles: the osmoseur is the most effective solution.
Our three osmoseurs:
- Pure Balance Eco-friendly and energy-free, the best value for money;
- Robust Mini : Pure water continuously, without a tank;
- Cross 90 Balance High-end features, remineralization and indicator lights for filter changes.
In summary
- The carafe improves the taste; the osmoseur purifies the water.
- For PFASs, pesticides and nitrates, reverse osmosis remains the reference domestic solution.
- In terms of cost over time, an osmoseur often comes out cheaper than bottled water.
